You’re getting UV-blocking fabric that’s rated for outdoor use in Texas. That means it handles sun, wind, and the occasional downpour without falling apart. Most of our clients in Bohls choose fabrics that block 90–95% of UV rays, which keeps the space cooler and protects everything underneath.
If you want full privacy or complete light control, blackout roller shades are an option. They’re thicker, block more heat, and turn your patio into a usable space even during peak sun hours. You can also go with solar shades, which let you see out but keep the heat and glare down.
Motorization is available on every system we install. You can add remote controls, wall switches, or integrate with Alexa and Google Home. For larger patios or multiple shades, motorized control makes a huge difference—you’re not walking around adjusting three or four shades manually every time the sun shifts.
And these systems are built to handle wind. Standard outdoor roller shades manage 45–65 mph gusts. If you’re in a more exposed area or want extra durability, we can upgrade to wind-rated systems that hold up to 85 mph or higher.
Most projects run between $1,500 and $5,000 depending on the size of your patio, the number of shades, and whether you go motorized. A single 8-foot shade with manual operation is going to be on the lower end. A full patio setup with four motorized shades and blackout fabric will be closer to the higher end.

And yes, it’s an investment. But you’re also cutting energy costs, protecting expensive outdoor furniture, and adding functional square footage to your home. Most of our clients in the Bohls and Round Rock area see a noticeable drop in their cooling bills during summer, especially if the shades are covering west- or south-facing windows.
If they’re built for it, yes. That’s why fabric choice matters. We use outdoor-rated materials that are designed to handle UV exposure, high heat, and moisture. Cheap shades fade, crack, or sag after one Texas summer. The ones we install don’t.
Wind resistance is another factor. Standard systems handle everyday wind without issue—up to about 55 mph. If you want something more robust, we offer upgraded hardware and tensioning systems that keep the fabric tight and stable even during storms. For areas that get frequent high winds, we’ll recommend a wind-rated system from the start.
As for rain, these shades dry fast and won’t mildew if they’re made from the right material. You’re not dealing with fabric that holds water or breaks down in humidity. Central Texas gets more rain than people expect, and your shades need to handle that without constant maintenance.
Manual shades work. You pull a cord or use a crank, and the shade goes up or down. They’re reliable, they’re less expensive, and there’s no wiring involved. If you’ve only got one or two shades and you don’t mind adjusting them by hand, manual is a solid choice.
Motorized makes more sense when you have multiple shades, when your patio is large, or when you just want convenience. You’re controlling everything from a remote or your phone, and you can set schedules so the shades lower automatically when the sun hits a certain angle. That’s useful in Texas, where the afternoon sun can turn your patio into an oven in about 20 minutes.
Motorization also integrates with smart home systems. If you’ve already got Alexa, Google Home, or another setup, your shades become part of that ecosystem. You can create scenes—like “lower the patio shades and turn on the fans” with one command. It’s not a gimmick. It’s how most of our Bohls clients are setting up their outdoor spaces now.
Most installs take half a day, sometimes less. If you’re doing a single shade on a small patio, we’re usually done in a couple of hours. Larger setups with multiple motorized shades might take four to six hours, depending on the wiring and mounting requirements.
We’re not rushing. We’re making sure the brackets are level, the fabric rolls smoothly, and the motor controls are programmed correctly if you went that route. From the time you approve the quote to installation day, it’s typically two to three weeks. That includes ordering your custom shades and scheduling the install around your availability. If you need it faster, let us know—we’ll do what we can to move things up.
Yes, if they’re installed on the exterior and covering windows or glass doors. Here’s why: when you block heat outside, you’re stopping it before it enters your home. Interior blinds or curtains trap heat between the glass and the fabric, which still warms up your house. Exterior roller shades stop that heat transfer at the source.
Most of our clients see a 10–20 degree temperature drop on their patios once the shades are down. That means your AC isn’t working as hard to cool the rooms adjacent to those spaces. Over a Texas summer, that adds up—especially in Bohls and the surrounding areas where you’re running AC from May through September.
The exact savings depend on your home’s insulation, window size, and how much sun exposure you’re dealing with. But blocking 90–95% of UV rays makes a measurable difference. You’ll feel it when you walk outside, and you’ll see it on your energy bill.
Minimal. You’re wiping them down with a damp cloth a few times a year, and that’s about it. The fabrics we use don’t attract dirt or hold onto dust the way indoor curtains do. If pollen builds up in spring, a quick rinse with a hose usually handles it.
You’re not dealing with moving parts that need constant adjustment. Motorized systems are sealed and built to last, so there’s no regular maintenance on the motors either. If something does go wrong, we handle it—but that’s rare.
